Fellows in the one year program will be assigned thirteen 4-week obstetrical rotations divided between Deaconess Medical Center and Sacred Heart Medial Center. It should be recognized that these assignment schedules are fixed in order to coordinate with assignment of residents.
Each fellow will have four 4-week elective rotations during the fellowship year. Electives include a combination of Family Medicine, OB ultrasound, genetics, GYN surgery, time at Planned Parenthood and other experience agreeable to the fellow and OB fellowship director. The fellow rounds as the FMS faculty with residents on the family medicine in-patient service for one week during each of the fellow's electives. Vacation time is to be taken during these selective rotations. There is one 4 week elective during the 28 week OB fellowship experience.
While this fellowship emphasizes obstetrical training, we recognize the importance of maintaining and improving family practice skills. Fellows are encouraged to utilize their elective time in ways that help to enhance those skills. Structured family practice assignments during electives (either in rural practice or in the family practice center) are available. Fellows are encouraged to precept residents in the family practice center on a regular basis throughout the year. The precepting experience allows fellows to participate in problem solving and patient management in the family practice setting without the responsibility for subsequent follow up.
The OB call schedule is either comprised of 2 - 4 OB Fellows and senior level FMS residents. Assignments are made in conjunction with resident schedules. The fellow's responsibilities are centered on high risk patients as defined by FMS and each medical center.
Depending on the number of Fellows and residents assigned to a 4 week block, each OB Fellow will have 9 to 12, 24-hour shifts per 4-week block. You remain in the hospital on your assigned call shifts.
Some Sundays will be uncovered when there are only 2 Fellows on the service.
Each OB Fellow will be scheduled for 5 to 6 24-hour blocks of time completely off of the OB Service during each 4 week rotation.
