About the Obstetrics Fellowship

 

Fellowship in obstetrics and family medicine which offers a unique opportunity for FPs to learn management of high risk and operative obstetrics while participating in teaching and mentoring residents, medical students and obstetrical staff.

The Fellowship is intended for FPs who desire emphasis in training in the hospital care of high risk and complicated obstetrics and in the management of the medical complications of pregnancy. Completion of the Fellowship should maximize subsequent medical practice in a rural and/or underserved location or in teaching obstetrics in a Family Medicine residency program.

This Fellowship includes precepting Family Medicine residents and elective time. This Obstetrical Fellowship, established in 1987, consists of thirteen 4-week rotations.

History of Fellowship

The traditional one year fellowship was established in 1984 following the closing of the OB/GYN residency at Sacred Heart Medical Center. The fellowship was created to assist in providing full time senior house staff coverage to the obstetric services at Sacred Heart and Deaconess Medical Centers. Educationally it offers concentrated post residency training and experience to enhance or re-establish obstetrical skills. The six month OB Fellowship was established in 2004 to meet the needs of regional communities and family physicians in providing Obstetrical care for their patients.

Skills and Experience

The one year and six month fellowship is intended for family physicians who desire emphasis in training in the hospital care of high risk and complicated obstetrics and in the management of medical complications of pregnancy in order to maximize skillful subsequent medical practice in underserved, rural or isolated locations. The following procedures and skills are examples of the experience previous one year fellows have received. This is only a representation of the past experience of former OB fellows completing the one year experience. Future procedures and skills may or may not include the type and level of experience. There are other skills not listed below or new skills or procedures that may be added in the future.

  • Cesarean Sections 100 - 200
  • Vaginal Deliveries 30 - 150
  • Vacuum Deliveries 15 - 25
  • Post Partum D&C 10 - 33
  • Post Partum Tubal Ligation 30 - 70
  • Obstetrical Sonography 30 - 200
  • Term Amniocentesis 5 - 20

In addition to the above skills and procedures, other areas of experience include:

  • Shoulder Dystocia
  • Management of High Risk Pregnancy
  • Management of Medical Complications of Pregnancy
