Resident & Graduate Perspectives

I knew after my student rotation with Family Medicine Spokane that this would be my first choice program.  Spokane is a great place to live during residency—easy access to everything because it is not too big, but big enough to have the international restaurants I like.  i also chose this program for its ability to bridge the benefits of rural training with urban training.  As the medical center for 200 miles in all directions, it provides ample amounts of both populations.  I have found the faculty to be knowledgable and approachable, and I feel that I can approach any of them with medical or career topics. — Deborah Wiser (2008 Graduate practicing in Spokane, WA)

People often ask me what I like most about Family Medicine Spokane.  I usually start by explaining the great training in a variety of fields or the outdoor fun a city like Spokane can offer.  However, the real heart of FMS is the people.  FMS has a unique structure of faculty that have a wealth of experience with a desire to teach.  From the beginning, the atmosphere at FMS is one of educating and encouraging.  Moreover, you form a bond with the other residents by sharing and growing together.  The camaraderie at FMS is contagious.  Residency is challenging.  It's very reassuring that there are both residents and faculty who are readily available to encourage and direct you.  There is more to learn in residency than medicine.  FMS has become a home. — John Tollerson, DO (2007 Graduate, practicing in Kalispell, MT)

I've been very satisfied with my decision to come to FMS.  This program challenges its residents to become excellent, independent physicians.  Inpatient Obstetrics and Pediatrics offer opportunities few other Family Medicine programs can match - unopposed teaching & patient management at nation-leading hospitals.  The city is a wonderful place to live, especially for those with outdoor interests.  Spokane is large enough to be interesting, but small enough to be unassuming and makes a good family home.  My fellow residents, FMS staff, & faculty make going to work enjoyable & rewarding. — Bill Irvine, MD (2008 Graduate practicing in Oregon)

Highlights of FMS for me include the supportive faculty who were always available, the outstanding OB instruction in both low and high risk deliveries and antepartum management, the variety of procedures, and the fantastic outdoor recreational opportunities that abound here. As a mother of 2 toddlers, I found this program to be especially supportive and understanding of my various roles as mother, spouse and resident. This is a very family friendly program. Spokane provides a surprisingly diverse population to care for and from whom to learn. We have great rural rotation sites that emphasize full scope family practice in a smaller community, as well as immigrant populations that require a certain cultural sensitivity and understanding when providing optimal care. Overall, I was very happy with my decision to come to FMS. — Debra Gore, MD (Graduate 2003)

Family Medicine Spokane is an excellent place to train in family medicine. The program is well rounded, offering good training both in the hospitals and the clinic. The faculty and staff are easy to work with, and there is a supportive learning environment within the program. In addition to the good training, Spokane is a nice place to live with affordable housing and access to many outdoor recreational activities. — Brian Anderson, DO (Graduate 2004)

What I enjoy most about FMS is the people. You have faculty members you can not only talk to, but play volleyball with and residents who are hardworking and supportive. The staff is always willing to answer questions whether it is about billing or good places to eat in Spokane. — Heather Armstrong, MD (Graduate 2002)

I would highly recommend FMS to anyone considering a Family Medicine residency.  Whether you are wanting to practice in a small community or belong to a large practice, you will be well prepared and respected among your colleagues.  Graduates from my class are performing c-sections in rural towns, signing on to be hospitalists, joining large practices, and working in ER's and urgent care settings.  You will be among a close group of friends and an outstanding faculty that will become your extended 'family'.  Whether single or married with children, you will find a supportive environment that will provide an excellent education, yet encourage you to get out and explore what Spokane has to offer. — Rebecca Meiers, DO (Graduate 2006)
