About the Spokane Residency Program

Sacred Heart Medical Center
Sacred Heart Medical Center
Family Medicine Spokane is an unopposed Family Medicine Residency Program located in downtown Spokane, Washington.  From its inception we have enjoyed an outstanding level of support from our geographic, medical, and economic community. We feel that we offer the best of both worlds; a strong academic presence by the University of Washington as well as an abundance of clinical opportunities within our community. We are extremely fortunate in having a very stable practice, faculty, and staff, which optimizes the education of our resident physicians.

The FMS Experience

Our patients

Primarily urban underserved population including Medicaid and Medicare patients, some private insurance, and sliding-scale fee-for-service.

Our Facilities

The clinic is located in Fifth and Browne Medical Building, a medical building with pharmacy and laboratory services.  Most of our hospital work is in Sacred Heart Medical Center (our sponsor), including inpatient, obstetric, and inpatient pediatrics rotations.  Some additional training takes place in Deaconess Medical Center and various community outpatient sites.  Sacred Heart is located 2 blocks from our clinic, and Deaconess is 4 blocks from us.  Both hospitals have resident call rooms and multiple doctor and resident lounges.  Cafeteria food is good, extensive with choices, and free while on duty!  There is an espresso stand in each hospital (self-pay).

The Rural Experience

Given the greater surrounding area of rural around our moderately-sized city, we enjoy also a significant rural patient and practice exposure.  Each of our residents rotates in one of our rural sites and this is a point of enhanced learning that our residents rave about.

Obstetrics with flexibility

Our program offers the flexibility for a more enhanced and hands-on obstetrics experience that is well beyond what most programs can offer.  We have a significant number of residents that graduate with the ability to get priveledged in c-sections if they pursue it.

Technology

We use electronic health records which is integrated with our hospital systems, laboratories, and imaging centers.  All residents currently recieve an Ipod Touch or stipend toward a smart phone.  The University of Washington Network provides access to Healthlinks, an extensive electronic tool providing resources such as Dynamed, Up-To-Date, and much more.

Teamwork

We are committed to making things work for our residents, our patients, and our community.  This means if something is not working right we will strive to make it better.

Unopposed

The only other residency programs in town are the Internal Medicine Residency, whom we collaborate with, and the radiology and psychiatry programs.

The History of Our Programs

Family Medicine Spokane was established in 1972 as a fully accredited family medicine residency program. In 1984 we established one of the first post graduate fellowships in obstetrical training providing obstetric experience for graduate family physicians. In 1986 Family Medicine Spokane established the first Rural Training Track program which has become the national model and standard for rural community based graduate medical education.  Additionally, in 2008 we established our Sports Medicine program, providing sports medicine opportunities at every level, from grade school through professional sports.

Our Commitment

Our commitment to our residents is to provide a comprehensive educational experience. We remain committed to this mission and have adapted our curriculum to prepare our graduates for not only the cognitive, but also the procedural demands of the well-trained contemporary family physician.

The WWAMI Network

We are one of sixteen family practice residency programs affiliated with the University of Washington School of Medicine, Department of Family Medicine. We offer a Traditional Program (FMS) and a Rural Training Track Program (FMSRTT). All FMS and FMSRTT faculty members hold academic appointments with the University of Washington School of Medicine.

Good Residents and Fellows Wanted

We seek residents who desire a dynamic, broad based training experience in family medicine and who are motivated to become the best possible physician and community member they can be. We encourage applications from individuals attending all medical schools. We thank you and welcome your interest in our program.
